Case Study: Meat The Need
Exceeding donation expectations
The Big Feed is NZ’s first rural telethon. One week before Christmas the goal was set – to raise 1 million ‘meals’ in one day; it’s about rural NZ coming together to help kiwis doing it tough. We’re proud to say, along with Perriam Media, we helped the Meat The Need team exceed their target with 1,200,000 meals raised in 13.5 hours.

13.5 hours, 13 crew, 1.2 million meals
It was a big task – pulling together a 13.5 hr event in less than a month. Tandem’s regular live streaming setup only constituted half the equipment needed to pull it off, but with the help of some amazing local contractors and our mates over at Lightchasers, we soon had everything we needed.
Three days before the event the pack-in started, with a make-shift studio built in a small lecture room at Lincoln University. The studio had a 4 person seating setup and a “letterbox” which would be used throughout the day to announce updates in the donation tally. The livestream was broadcast to Vimeo (embedded on the Meat The Need website) and Facebook (on the Meat The Need page). Hours of testing later, and several long days for our crew, we were ready to go.
4am Thursday 15th December, our crew were on-site for final testing and run throughs. During the day we worked closely with the Meat The Need crew to broadcast two hosts in the studio chatting with more than 30 remote participants from around New Zealand (via Zoom) and some cracking outdoor challenges including sheep shearing and axe throwing. The number of remote participants joining throughout the day gave us some grey hairs, relying on varying reliability of internet connections and farming schedules, but we managed to get through the day with only a couple of connection issues.
All in all everything ran smoothly and by the end of the day every single person from the production team and Meat The Need were a mix of exhilarated and exhausted. It was welcome news to hear donations had reached more than the target, with 1.2 million meals donated in total.
